Buffalo Creek Nature Preserve

Wendell, North Carolina

The initial Phase I concept plan for Buffalo Creek Nature Preserve includes development of the southwest parcel opposite of Roberson Millpond. Amenities for this site include kayak rental facilities, public parking to accommodate trailers, a staff maintenance hub, hiking trails, signage, environmental education, and pedestrian connections to the existing Robertson Millpond site.

The project site abuts the Robertson Mill Pond Nature Preserve and extends north following Buffalo Creek towards NC 401 and the headwaters for the creek. The total site acreage is approximately 939 acres. The site contains Buffalo Creek, tributaries including intermittent and perennial streams, and stream buffers, wetlands, forest and open meadows and fields. The site infrastructure systems will be examined in context with the Robertson Mill Pond and adjacent parcels. Most likely, site sewer and water systems will be limited to septic and well. The site is a resource and habitat for local and migratory bird species, as well as reptiles, amphibians and mammals. The forest is a mix of hardwood, pine and riparian species. Site access will be evaluated as part of the concept plan study.
