The design of the site for the Hsu residence reflects the unique program needs expressed by the Owners. The Hsu’s had high-performance expectations for their property that included a guest home with proximity to the main home, an extensive meadow for animal husbandry and exercise and recreational elements for walking, running, fishing, canoeing and swimming.
Forested in a mix of oak and pine, Surface worked alongside the architect and client to preserve existing pines trees, where applicable, to expose an overlook of the pond viewable from the residence. As a result of the dam in disrepair, the team dredged the pond and re-engineered the structure to accommodate water overflow. Fish habitat, a swimming pier, and kayak launch were then integrated around the pond post dam repair. The existing driveway was removed and repositioned to avoid varying elevation upon entry; instead, the new driveway terminates into a loop to give a sense of arrival with a view of the pond.
Other design elements include visitor parking fit for large gatherings, multiple decks, patios, and roof top terraces which capitalize on the striking views surrounding the property. A naturally shaped stream guides water under and around the property toward the pond, creating a separation between the main and guest homes.
Additional improvements to the property include improvements to the barn, which includes an exercise studio and shelter for animal care. The landscape builds upon the site’s natural aesthetic with reforestation plantings along the perimeter and horticultural gardens closer to the home. The garden plantings reflect a simplicity desired by the Hsu’s, while nutritious meadow grasses support animal husbandry in the pasture and landscape screening provide privacy from the road across the pond.
