The site design for the new library in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, DC embraces the urban fabric, site topography, and existing trees to create an idiosyncratic response. The stadium seating along Good Hope Road creates opportunities for informal gathering while also providing the building with a plynth from which building program may be brought outside. A bosque of trees provides an architectural response for shade and reading opportunities. The site topography has been adapted to preserve two existing Willow Oaks 32” in diameter. The green space to the west of the building provides an opportunity for community to gather and for teaching. The Bioretention Garden is bordered by a seatwall and place for observation and discussion. The site work contributes to the buildings goal of achieving a LEED Silver Rating.
