As a landscape designer with Surface 678 since 2019, Zhuoying Chen applies her knowledge of systemic horticultural study to the tasks of modeling, rendering, and construction documentation. Ms. Chen’s background consists of research of cultural landscapes with the focus of the post-industrial locales and communities and large-scale planning and urban design. At Surface, Zhuoying enjoys the atmosphere of teamwork, collaboration, and dedication to each project.

Zhuoying enjoys learning about people and cultural landscapes, and she’s especially passionate about places with rich histories. She’s also interested in exploring a vast array of communities, which illuminate shared memories through design and show the interaction between culture and nature.

A recipient of the 2019 St. Louis ASLA Student Merit Award for her community engagement, Zhuoying’s work resulted in an art installation that crystallized the oral history of nuclear waste. This installation became an immersive public performance piece with storytelling multimedia.
