Paul Medling joined Surface 678 as a landscape designer in 2019 and brings a wide range of experience, including traditional Southern and European garden design; designing site, planting, and grading plans; leading labor crews; and construction administration. He also possesses considerable knowledge of marketing, client relations, and subconsultant coordination.
As a landscape designer, Paul assists the Surface team with producing and developing sites from conceptual designs into built and completed projects. He helps project managers with design, client-presentations, sub-consultant coordination, illustrative exhibits, plan production, and construction administration services.
With an environmental background, Paul uses a design approach that builds upon each site’s surrounding context. Through collaborating with team members and communicating with consultants, he helps to develop ideas best for intertwining ecological factors and enriching materiality.
Paul thoroughly enjoys working in a profession that revolves around design, culture, discovery, creativity, and the environment. What he likes most about working at Surface is the attention to detail and quality of design, the mentorship and leadership from senior and principal staff, working on projects that vary in scale and project type, and the opportunities for self-development.
Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf is one of Paul’s greatest horticultural and landscape design influences, and he aspires to have a similar understanding of plant ecology and the complex inner workings of natural plant communities.
Beyond work, Paul is happily settling into fatherhood while also finding respite in fishing, exercising, hiking, hunting, and spending time with family and friends.
