The Oyster Research Production Facility is a research environment for the reintroduction of various shellfish species to North Carolina’s waterways in an effort to improve the health of the North Carolina’s waterways. The 11,000 square foot building includes labs, class rooms and offices. The design for the 3.54 site seeks to preserve the existing site and features, maintain existing grade, minimize root disturbance and preserve the existing forest community. To accomplish this, visitors and staff arrive at the building via a boardwalk over existing wetlands and through existing oaks. The project limit line is drawn closely around the building, limiting the construction impact and preserving the existing forest community.
