Vivian Street Plaza
Surface 678 designed the Vivian Street plaza to create a vital link in the heart of Durham’s Entertainment District. The plaza and streetscape join the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) and neighboring American Tobacco Campus (ATC). The design recalls imagery from the site’s industrial past. Pavement patterning, embedded lights, and the alignment of water features visually reference the contemporary architecture of DPAC while remnant manufacturing structures honor the history of ATC. Fountains in the plaza are designed with the flexibility to be turned off and converted to stage space for outdoor events.
