Main at Gervais Plaza
Surface 678 designed the ground floor plaza of an 18-story tower located across Main Street from the South Carolina State House. The plaza design successfully integrates “placemaking” and function in a way that enhances the downtown pedestrian environment and the character of the State Capitol grounds. The plaza provides shaded seating under preserved oak trees, linear beds of flowering ornamental trees, shrubs, and drought tolerant groundcovers such as Carex. Hardscape patterning extends the detailing of the main office tower lobby and complements planting alignments. A pedestrian forecourt creates outdoor seating opportunities for restaurant patrons.
