First Presbyterian Church

Located one block from the State Capitol, First Presbyterian Church has been a part of Raleigh’s downtown community since 1816. A series of renovations and additions had turned the iconic structure into a disjointed collection of buildings and open spaces. As part of a project that involved a sanctuary renovation and building expansion, Surface 678 designed the renovation of several outdoor spaces. Renovations to the existing parking lot were modeled after the Dutch “woonerf,” resulting in a pedestrian-friendly street that provides an outdoor space with a grove and seating while accommodating cars. Designed this way, the space allows for weekend special events as well as weekday vehicular movement.
