Duke University Medical Center Pavilion Courtyards
The Duke University Medical Center (DMP) underwent a major transformation in 2013. Surface 678 was brought in to redesign the facility’s courtyards. DMP requested spaces that would be visually soothing and calming for patients, staff and visitors of the surgery recovery rooms.
Our response was an innovative series of courtyards and light wells. Surrounded by patient rooms and staff offices, the courtyards provide a soothing atmosphere to promote healing and psychological well-being. The design features trees in soil depths up to three feet, unusual for courtyards built above occupied space.
