UNC School of the Arts
The 282-seat Watson Chamber Music Hall is the principle performance venue for the School of Music concert series, guest artist, faculty and graduating senior recitals. The building serves as a companion anchor to Performance Plaza, a ceremonial drop off space created between the Music Hall and an existing performance venue and focused around a massive White Oak. Vehicular and walkway paving treatments extend the arrival experience from a newly configured campus entrance and privatized Waughtown Street to the building entrances. The Music Hall’s basic form reflects the existing slopes, inspiring sweeping upper terraces and a series of playful site retaining walls. Vine-covered metal scrims along the terrace base complete the landscape-building connection.
